Projects have taken many forms, sometimes the process is just as important as the final image or the story is larger than any one image by itself.

Tree Pandemic: Dutch Elm Disease

Once a dominant tree of the eastern forests and a common neighborhood street tree, the American Elm was a symbol of American abundance. Now mostly missing from the American canopy, the story of its rise and fall are explored in this illustrative video.

Tree Pandemic: Emerald Ash Borer

A more recent victim,  ash trees are dying in massive swaths all over North America due to the introduced pest, Emerald Ash Borer. After arriving in the Midwest, the beetle and its larvae eat the inside of the living tree mostly unchecked. This feast leaves the dead ash tree trunks and branches behind.

Thank you Kim Steiner, Ph.D.
Professor of Forest Biology at Penn State for sharing this ash tree plantation in State College, PA.

Painting Process: Eastern White Pine in Fairmount Park

This particular tree has a particular form that makes it a joy to paint. Being ever green, it also gives even the coldest winter days some much needed greenery.
